Love and seek wisdom
Love and seek wisdom. By wisdom I mean the wisdom that comes from God, not that comes from the world. God’s wisdom is based in love — love God, neighbor, and yourself. God’s wisdom is shown most profoundly in Jesus Christ, who, although God, became a human to bring humanity to God. God did that in Jesus through his birth, ministry of love and healing, death, resurrection, and ascension.
Proverbs 8 tells of the relationship between wisdom and wealth/prosperity. Wisdom speaks saying;
I love those who love me,
and those who seek me diligently find me.
Riches and honor are with me,
enduring wealth and prosperity. (Proverbs 8:17-18, New Revised Standard Version)
Note the order — love and seek wisdom first and riches, honor, wealth, and prosperity follow. What that looks like will depend on each individual. What we do know is that it will be healthy and life giving — for the world, community, friends, family, and the self. It will be abundance in the fullness of a good life.
Wisdom is to be sought first
What happens when one attempts abundance in the reverse order? It does not work at all;
Take my instruction instead of silver,
and knowledge rather than choice gold;
for wisdom is better than jewels,
and all that you may desire cannot compare with her. (Proverbs 8:10-11, NRSV)
When the seeking of riches, honor, wealth, or prosperity is attempted as the first and only priority, then the most important thing, living out of wisdom, living a godly life, will likely be sacrificed. That brings one poverty of a most profound level.
Seek wisdom first and foremost, and abundance, however that is meant to look like for you, will be able to follow.
Make wisdom your first priority
What do we take from this in our entrepreneurial journey as Christians? Listen one last time to wisdom;
And now, my children, listen to me:
happy are those who keep my ways.
Hear instruction and be wise,
and do not neglect it.
Happy is the one who listens to me,
watching daily at my gates,
waiting beside my doors.
For whoever finds me finds life
and obtains favor from the Lord. (Proverbs 8:32-35, NRSV)
As Christian entrepreneurs, we are seeking abundance and success when we first love and seek wisdom, God’s loving intent for us and the world, and respond with our faith filled lives. God’s wisdom is more precious than all else, including fleeting success. May we be happy and wise by loving and seeking wisdom, by listening for God’s word for us this day.
